National Award for Wooden Architecture awarded to a project consulted by the Civil Engineering Department

The Rural Hotel Casa do Rio, designed by architect Francisco Vieira de Campos for Quinta do Vallado, built by Rusticasa, won the 2019 National Architecture Award in Madeira.

This project counted on the consultancy of the Department of Civil Engineering of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, namely in the area of Wood Structures, through Professor Jorge Branco who collaborated in the development of some innovative solutions applied in the construction of this work.

The project was considered the best by a jury chaired by Nuno Martins Melo, winner of the last edition of PNAM, in 2017, with “Os Passadiços do Paiva”. There were eight finalists from the 17 works selected throughout the country and islands.

The hotel has only six rooms, but is strategically located between the vineyards and the Douro River, having been built entirely in wood and suspended under a water line where there is still an old orange orchard.
