Raul Fangueiro joins Portugal’s National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation

Dispatch no. 12699/2024, issued by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – Prime Minister’s Office, was published in the Diário da República on 24 October, setting out the composition of Portugal’s National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation.  The CNCTI is responsible for collaborating in the development and sustainability of the national scientific and technological system, the internationalisation of Portuguese science and the promotion of Portuguese as a working language in science, ensuring scientific advice and fostering the transversal and inter-ministerial articulation of science and technology policies. The CNCTI must also collaborate in parliamentary debates on science, technology and innovation, whenever requested to do so by the Assembly of the Republic.

Raúl Fangueiro, full professor and vice-president of UMinho’s School of Engineering, joins this important council as an advisory member, along with other representatives of recognised merit from R&D institutions, technology and innovation centres, higher education institutions, clinical academic centres, science and technology networks and consortia, the business community and the international scientific community, such as Adélio Mendes, full professor at FEUP, Amelia Santos, co-founder and CEO of Innuos, Anabela Raymundo, associate professor with aggregation at the University of Lisbon, Eliano Marques, executive leader of products, data and AI, Fernando Sousa, administrator at CEI, ZIPOR, INOCAM, Gonçalo Quadros, president of Critical Software, Guy Villax , member of the board of directors of Hovione, Inês Lynce, professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, president of INESC-ID and co-director of CMU Portugal, Isabel Furtado, CEO of TMG Automotive, Joana Branco, director of Innovation and Ecosystem Development – Biocant Park, Maria Manuel Mota, Group leader and executive director of iMM, Nuno Bicho, professor at the University of the Algarve, Pedro Barquinha, associate professor at FCT-NOVA, Group leader at CENIMAT|I3N and CEMOP-UNINOVA, Pedro Gamboa, assistant professor at the University of Beira Interior, Pedro Oliveira, director of the Nova School of Business and Economics, Ricardo Mendes, co-founder and executive director of Tekever, Rui Paiva, global head of the Mobileum RISK unit, Teresa Mouga, professor at the Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar of the Polytechnic of Leiria and Tiago Sequeira, professor at the University of Coimbra.

For Raúl Fangueiro, this will be a unique opportunity to make a significant contribution to promoting science and technology in the country: ‘I feel very honoured to have been invited by the Portuguese government to join the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. It will undoubtedly be an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development and sustainability of the national scientific and technological system and, in some way, to participate in advising the government in this area. The issues addressed by this Council play a vital role in the country’s future development, so I will humbly do my best in this role.’

This Council will be chaired by Carlos Oliveira, an alumnus of UMinho’s School of Engineering, proposed by the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Fernando Alexandre, and the Minister of Economy, Dr Pedro Reis.
