Rosa Vasconcelos, professor at the Department of Textile Engineering at EEUM and Student Ombudsman at the University of Minho, was elected on October 11 as the next president of the IEEE Education Society, one of the main international scientific societies dedicated to education in engineering and technology, becoming the first Portuguese in this position.
Rosa Vasconcelos will serve as president-elect in the 2027-2028 biennium, then assume in 2029-2031 the presidency of a global community of academics, researchers and professionals committed to innovation and excellence in engineering education.
This election recognizes her academic career and work over the last few years in areas such as engineering education, pedagogical quality and innovation, ethics, academic integrity and the defense of students’ rights. Her experience – as a professor at the School of Engineering and Student Ombudsman at UMinho, president of the Portuguese Network of Student Ombudsmen and coordinator of the Ibero-American Network of University Defenders – reinforces the commitment to an institutional culture focused on promoting equity, participation and social responsibility in higher education.
“I take on this challenge with a great honor and an added responsibility, for an IEEE Education Society that is increasingly inclusive, global and close to its members, contributing to the development of innovative solutions that respond to the current challenges of engineering and technology education,” said Rosa Vasconcelos.
“This distinction represents a personal recognition, but also the recognition of the quality of higher education and research at UMinho and Portugal, contributing to strengthen the international projection and that of our scientific community in the education and training of engineers”, he stressed.
The IEEE Education Society is part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to the advancement of technology for the benefit of humanity, playing a leading role in promoting research, pedagogical innovation and international cooperation in the field of engineering education.
