Paulo Flores, full professor at the University of Minho’s School of Engineering, received the ‘Illustrious Personality of Mechanical Engineering’ award from the Ibero-American Federation of Mechanical Engineering for distinguishing himself in teaching and research in mechanical engineering.
The award was presented on 23 October 2024 at the University of Conception in Chile, as part of the XVI Ibero-American Congress of Mechanical Engineering, which took place there from 22 to 24 October. This award is intended to recognise outstanding dedication and contribution to the development of mechanical engineering in Ibero-America. As part of the congress, Paulo Flores gave a seminar on ‘An Historical Overview of Dynamics of Mechanical Systems’.
Paulo Flores was born in Rossas, Vieira do Minho, on 19th December 1972. He obtained his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minho in 1997, followed by his Scientific-Pedagogical Tests (2000), PhD (2005) and Aggregation (2011) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minho. In 2009, he completed a post-doctorate at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH-Zurich, and in 2010, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Arizona (USA). He has been working at the University since 1995, where his topics of interest in teaching and scientific research are linked to the areas of Mechanical Systems Dynamics, Design and Selection of Mechanical Components, Mechanical Contact and Biomechanics. A full professor since 2013, he is the author of numerous scientific and pedagogical publications and is on the ‘World’s Top 2%’ list of the world’s leading scientists.
