More than 30 EEUM students receive sports merit award

UMinho presented its Sports Merit Awards on 6 March. Combining sporting excellence with academic success earned 71 students the award.

The University of Minho (UMinho) once again honoured students who combined sporting excellence with academic success in 2022/2023. A total of 71 student athletes who achieved excellent results in 13 sports were honoured with Sports Merit Awards (PMD).  Handball and volleyball were the most honoured sports.

The Sports Merit Awards ceremony for the 2022/2023 season took place on 6 March in the Great Hall of the Rectory of the University of Minho in Braga.

The session was attended by the Rector of UMinho, Rui Vieira de Castro, the Administrator of the Social Action Services, Alexandra Seixas, the President of the Academic Association, Margarida Isaías, and the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport, João Paulo Correia.

This was, above all, a moment to honour student athletes who, individually or collectively, have become National University Champions or achieved medals at European or world level and who, at the same time, have achieved academic success in accordance with the conditions laid down in the Regulations for Awarding Scholarships to Higher Education Students.

The 71 awarded students received the scholarship and the respective certificates attesting to their excellence in sport and academics. They come from 43 courses at UMinho, and the schools most represented in this year’s winners are the School of Engineering (32), the School of Medicine (10) and the School of Economics and Management (9).

The Men’s and Women’s Handball and Women’s Volleyball teams were crowned champions in the Final Stages of the National University Championships (CNU’s) 2023, which took place in the city of Viana do Castelo between 17 and 28 April. Men’s Handball also won the Bronze medal at the European University Championships. These were the sports that saw the most athletes elected to receive the award, 22 and 13 respectively.

Of the 71 students to be honoured, 40 are female and 31 male.

The Sports Merit Awards are now in their 14th year. In all, 1,014 Sports Merit Awards have already been given out, totalling more than 235 thousand euros.

About the Merit Awards

The prizes are indexed to the annual tuition fee and are awarded only to students who pass at least 50 per cent of the credits of the subjects in which they were enrolled and simultaneously achieve excellent sporting results representing the Academy. The amount of the prize varies between the full tuition fee for students who have won gold medals in international university competitions and 12.5 per cent of the full tuition fee for students who have won national university championships in team sports or relay races.
