On International Women’s Day, the national agency Ciência Viva launched the fifth edition of the book ‘Women in Science’, which includes 107 more female researchers.
Ten of the faces are from the University of Minho, from the Schools of Science, Engineering, Medicine, Psychology and the Institute of Social Sciences. Specifically, biologist Cristina Amorim Cunha, chemist Daniela Correia, pharmacist Fátima Baltazar, bioengineers Joana Azeredo, Lucília Domingues and Mariana Henriques, biomedical engineer Helena Prado Felgueiras, physicist Madalena Lira, psychologist Teresa Freire and communicologist Teresa Ruão.
Teresa Ruão, also Pro-Rector for Institutional Communication at UMinho, was one of the guest speakers at the book presentation ceremony at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento in Lisbon. The initiative was attended by the Secretary of State for Science, Ana Paiva, and the president of Ciência Viva, Rosalia Vargas, among other figures.
This book is a way of honouring women scientists, who represent half of all researchers in Portugal and whose work has been central to the progress of science and technology in recent decades.
On the other hand, it contributes to the affirmation of knowledge, as well as raising awareness and inspiring society.
The publication has already had volumes in 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2023, including other UMinho researchers, such as Alexandra Marques, Ana João Rodrigues, Ana Paula Marques, Ana Paula Soares, Anabela Carvalho, Assunção Flores, Carina Soares-Cunha, Carla Martins, Cláudia Pascoal, Diana Priscila Pires, Graça Simões de Carvalho, Helena Machado, Isabel Veiga, Joana Cabral, Lígia Rodrigues, Luísa Pinto, Madalena Alves, Manuela Martins, Margarida Fernandes, Maria Manuel Oliveira, Patrícia Jerónimo, Paula Varandas Ferreira, Sónia Moreira, as well as former students and researchers from this academy, such as Alexandra Silva, Eliana Souto, Isabel Ferreira, Isabel Rocha, Letícia Estevinho, Lilian Barros, Maria Inês Almeida, Manuela E.
