Shanghai Ranking recently published the results of ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024, including in its lists more than 1900 universities from 96 countries, evaluated in 55 specific areas of teaching and research.
Created in 2009, this ranking classifies higher education institutions on a set of nine indicators. In addition to a set of five indicators used in previous editions of this ranking, which include the number of articles published in the most prestigious journals in each scientific area, their impact and the level of international collaboration of these publications, in 2024 four new indicators have been added which seek to assess the international prestige of institutions in each scientific area.
The University of Minho achieved its highest rankings in the areas of Textile Engineering (position #21 in the world ranking) and Food Science and Technology (Top 75). Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering made the world’s Top 150 higher education institutions.
Three areas also gave the University of Minho a leading position among Portuguese universities in their respective scientific fields: Textile Engineering (#21), Education (Top 200) and Law (Top 300).
Among the 12 areas of teaching and research that have been distinguished in this 2024 edition of the Shanghai ranking (two more than in the previous edition), the following specialities are also listed: Biomedical Engineering (Top 300), Biotechnology (Top 400), Chemical Engineering (Top 400) and Materials Science and Engineering (Top 400) in the area of Engineering; Psychology (Top 400) in the area of Social Sciences and Human Biology (Top 500) in the area of Life Sciences.
