On 20 November, the Altamiro Machado auditorium at CCG/ZGDV, on the Azurém campus of UMinho in Guimarães, hosted the 4th edition of CPES SERIW – Software Engineering Research & Innovation Workshop, dedicated to the theme ‘Defence and Dual Use in Software Engineering’. The meeting brought together academia, industry and public entities to discuss emerging challenges, scientific priorities and the role of software engineering in a context of increasing technological complexity.
The session kicked off with a round table focused on the educational dimension of Defence and Dual Use. The speakers discussed fundamental topics such as ethics in teaching, training benchmarks, professional practices and the new skills required in higher education. Participants included Pedro Ribeiro (EEUM/DSI and CCG/ZGDV) (moderator), Manuel João Costa (Vice-Rector of UMinho), Margarida Melo (AIS.SC), Nuno Nunes (Order of Engineers – College of Computer Engineering), Alexandre Ferreira da Silva (EEUM/MIT Portugal) and Marta Santos Silva (JusGov and UMinho).
At the end of the afternoon, a round table discussion was held on the scientific dimension, to discuss R&D priorities, emerging technologies, national and European policies, and the challenges of structuring research organisations. The panel included Francisco J. Duarte (EEUM/DSI and CCG/ZGDV) (moderator), João Barbas (National Defence Institute), Ricardo J. Machado (EEUM/DSI and CCG/ZGDV), Nuno Nunes (IPSetúbal), Filipe Martins (Port Authority of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo) and Raul Fangueiro (EEUM-UMinho and Fibrenamics).
