Concert in Braga brings the EEUM’s 50th-anniversary celebrations to a close

With the Orchestra and Choir of the Department of Music at the School of Letters, Arts and Humanities of UMinho performing Mozart, the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the School of Engineering came to a close at the Theatro Circo in Braga.

In this performance, the UMinho Orchestra performed the overture to Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and “Exsultate, Jubilate”, whilst the Music Department Choir presented the composer’s “Coronation Mass”. The musical direction was under the baton of Maestro Vítor Matos.

For the EEUM, marking this occasion with the music of Mozart evokes the spirit of the European Enlightenment, characterised by a celebration of reason, science, intellectual curiosity and the ceaseless pursuit of knowledge.

The celebrations for EEUM’s 50th anniversary also began with a musical performance and were followed by exhibitions, in-person and online round-table discussions, the publication of a memoir and a digital graduation book, as well as charity initiatives, a picnic, a start-up and interface showcase, a “Careers Day” and a graduation ceremony, amongst other events.

In her speech, Maribel Yasmina Santos, Chair of the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Committee, summarised the Commemorative Programme: “In this year of celebrations, we have sought to honour the history and legacy of our School, showcase our present, and look ahead to the future of a School that has distinguished itself through innovation, knowledge and service to society.

The programme for this 50th-anniversary celebration has highlighted the relevance and diversity of the School of Engineering. From concerts to exhibitions, from debates to community events, each initiative has reminded us that engineering is not merely technical; it is also culture, creativity, social responsibility and a commitment to humanity.

We bring the celebrations to a close by honouring a journey which, like music, is made up of rhythm, harmony and collaboration.”
