EEUM students honoured at the XXII Sports Gala of the University of Minho

On 9 October, the University of Minho hosted the XXII Sports Gala. As usual, student athletes, coaches, managers and organisations will be honoured for their sporting contribution to UMinho’s success in the 2022/2023 academic year.

The ceremony, which took place in the Medieval Hall of the Rectory of the University of Minho (Largo do Paço, Braga), praised and celebrated those involved and the sport played at the University, applauding the effort, dedication and achievements of all those who have defended the colours of UMinho.

In the running for the 2023 awards were 20 personalities, five nominated in each of the categories (coach of the year, male athlete of the year, female athlete of the year and athlete of the year).

The School of Engineering was represented by its students in the following categories:

Male Athlete of the Year Award:

– João Noivo, Master’s student in Information Systems Engineering and Management, Basketball, Gold Medal and Silver Medal – 3×3 Basketball;

– Luiz Alexandre, Industrial Electronics and Computer Engineering graduate, Kickboxing, Gold Medal – Lightkick <74kg, Lowkick <71kg, Collective.

Female Athlete of the Year Award:

– Raquel Dantas, Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management, Basketball, Gold Medal – 3×3 Basketball;

Athlete of the Year Award:

– Eva Monteiro, Integrated Master’s Degree in Textile Engineering, Volleyball, 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals;

– Sofia Oliveira, Integrated Master’s Degree in Industrial Electronic and Computer Engineering, Kickboxing, 9 gold medals;

– André Gomes, Integrated Masters in Information Systems Engineering and Management, Basketball, 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals, 1 bronze medal.

The winners were Manuel Gomes (Coach of the Year), Mariana Machado (Female Athlete of the Year), Luiz Alexandre (Male Athlete of the Year) and Sofia Oliveira (Athlete Sports Route)!
