EEUM researchers are on the list of the world’s highly cited

António Vicente, José Teixeira and Miguel Cerqueira are on the “Highly Cited Researchers 2019” list

Three scientists linked to the University of Minho’s Center for Biological Engineering (CEB) are among the most cited in the world by other researchers. This is confirmed by the Highly Cited Researchers 2019 list of the US Clarivate Analytics, which includes 6216 scientists from almost 60 countries, 11 of them in Portugal, minus three compared to the 2018 edition. The ranking is for the period 2008-2018 and just about the highly cited articles, which represent 1% of what is published worldwide per year and for 21 scientific areas.

This is the second consecutive year that José António Teixeira, António Vicente and Miguel Ângelo Cerqueira (now working at the INL) are in the sciences area on the list. The scenario shows the institution’s research strategy, namely CEB, which has increased its visibility and is the national R&D center with the most scientists listed in the ranking. For instance, José António Teixeira has had his articles cited 15,580 times and is a reference in fermentation and food technology, having received several awards.

The bibliometric analyzes of the list were performed by the Institute of Scientific Information of the Web of Science group, which “weighed” the scientific articles of the same annual cohort, taking the advantage of citing older articles over newer ones. The countries most represented in the ranking are the USA (44% of the total), China (10%) and the United Kingdom (8%). There are 23 Nobel Prizes included, and Harvard University, USA, leads the volume of scientists (203). Quotations are one of the most commonly used criteria for ranking higher education institutions and show the significant influence of a group of researchers among their peers.
