Engineering and Art met at the UMinho Library

The School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM) presented the cultural initiative “Engineering and Art”, on 12 July, in the B-Lounge space of the General Library of the Gualtar campus, in Braga. The event was part of UMinho’s Fiftieth Anniversary programme, and was supported by the Documentation and Library Services Unit.

The session began with a poetic and musical moment led by professors Luís Soares Barbosa and Raúl Fangueiro and alumnus Luís Veloso. This was followed by a guided tour of the exhibition “IRREFLEXOS”, by the author Leonor Lapa, senior technician of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who brought a selection of photographs that she has captured since 2009 at UMinho events and spaces.

Luís Soares Barbosa is a professor at the Department of Informatics of the University of Minho and a researcher at INESC TEC and at the United Nations University – e-Governance Unit. He is the author of five books of poetry, such as “Fico só e falo com as sombras” (2016, Maria Ondina Braga Literary Award). Raúl Fangueiro is vice-president of EEUM, president of the Fibrenamics Association, professor in the Departments of Textile Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and co-founded several entities, including cultural ones, such as the Associação Recreativa e Cultural Universitária do Minho (ARCUM) and the Tuna Universitária do Minho (TUM). Luís Veloso has a degree in Civil Engineering from UMinho, co-founder of ARCUM and TUM, musician of the group Canto D’Aqui and tenor of the Gulbenkian Parents’ Association Choir.

For the EEUM presidency, “this event is part of the artistic manifestation of a person from our community and that has the School as a narrative object, in a register with high value. At the same time, the musical and poetic performance of engineers from this academy contributes to a perfect symbiosis between art and engineering”.

The IRREFLEXOS photographic exhibition will remain open until 8 September in the B-Lounge space of the General Library of the Gualtar campus, with free admission, and will then be exhibited again in November, in the B-Lounge space of the General Library of the Azurém campus, where a new initiative “Engineering and Art” will also take place.
