Engineering School prepares new generation of risk managers

NORISK project includes the creation of a European master’s degree and has its final session in Guimarães

The School of Engineering of the University of Minho held on 29 and 30 March the final workshop of the NORISK Erasmus+ project, which aims to prepare a new generation of technicians with multidisciplinary training in risk analysis and infrastructure management. The event took place in the main auditorium of the Azurém campus, in Guimarães, with 30 speakers from several countries and free entrance.

On the agenda was the presentation of the content of the European Master in Assessment and Management of Risks in Civil Infrastructures, currently being accredited, which is coordinated by UMinho and brings together the universities of Padua (Italy), La Rochelle (France) and Polytechnic of Catalonia (Spain), NORISK partners.

The opening session of the workshop was attended by the president of the Order of Engineers of the North Region, Bento Aires, the town councillor of Guimarães, Ana Berkeley Cotter and, from UMinho, the vice-rector of Education and Academic Mobility, Filomena Soares, the director of the Department of Civil Engineering, Rui Ramos, and the coordinator of NORISK, José Campos e Matos.

The programme covered examples of the application of this project’s tools, the phases of the risk management cycle or infrastructures in terms of management, resilience and digitalisation, among other aspects. The seven panels of lectures and round tables brought academics such as Alfred Strauss (Austria), Michael Faber (Denmark), Rade Hajdin (Serbia), Necati Catbas (USA) and Yannis Xenidis (Greece), as well as professionals Hugo Patrício (Infraestruturas de Portugal), Manuel Gião, Abel Mota Campos (Casais Group), Kristian Milenov (ASDE Ecoregions) and Radko Radkov (Stalker Ltd.).

Students from four countries also shared their experiences and spoke about the importance of the new master’s degree and NORISK at an international level, which is in line with the needs of stakeholders and the European Union guidelines in this field.
