João Luís Marques Pereira Monteiro, full professor in the Department of Electronic and Industrial Engineering, was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the University of Minho on 9 March.
He began his career at the University of Minho in October 1980 as a Trainee Assistant after obtaining, in the same year, a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Porto with a final grade of 16.
He obtained his PhD in Systems Engineering and Computer Science, specialising in Computer Engineering, in 1991, and his postdoctoral qualification in 2003, both from the University of Minho.
In the teaching field, he has taught modules in the areas of Signal Processing, Communications, Digital Systems and Microprocessors. Having always prioritised research and development work geared towards industrial application, since 1991 he has been the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on several dozen R&D projects funded by the FCT, AdI and FP7.
Since 2009, he has been the coordinator of the Embedded Systems Research Group (ESRG), an R&D group within the Industrial Electronics Division of the ALGORITMI Research Centre.
He has published around a hundred articles, either as a co-author or sole author.
He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Minho from April 2005 to October 2009. In this role, he coordinated various central services responsible at the time for the construction of four major University of Minho buildings with a total value of several million euros (ECS, ED, ENG2/ICS, IE/IP). The duties of Vice-Rector also included supporting the Rector and Vice-Rector in liaising with local authorities and partner institutions, as well as coordinating central services. He was Director of the ALGORITMI Research Centre from 1998 to 2006 and was re-elected in December 2010 until September 2013. In 2010, he was elected a member of the Scientific Council of the School of Engineering.
He was Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Minho between 2013 and 2019.
Awarded by the University of Minho to its retired and emeritus professors, the title of Professor Emeritus distinguishes professionals who have excelled in their field of expertise, due to the significance of their contribution, and who will continue to serve the University.
This distinction was publicly conferred by Order RT-58/2026, published on 9 March, with immediate effect, without prejudice to the presentation of the diploma and medal at the public ceremony on University Day.
