To-Be-Green, a spin-off of the School of Engineering of UMinho, has partnered with the El Corte Inglés group in the initiative “Solidarity Bags, which transform textile waste into aid against cancer, combining circular economy, sustainability and social responsibility.
The bags are produced from the recycling of post-consumer textiles collected in “Zero Waste” containers, being transformed into new products with practical utility and solidarity character. The goal is to reduce textile waste and extend the life cycle of materials through a circular economy model.
The campaign started on May 25, in El Corte Inglés supermarkets in Lisbon and Gaia and in Supercor stores in Braga, Fluvial, Coimbra, Restelo, Beloura and Expo. Each bag costs 4 euros, which reverts entirely to the Portuguese League Against Cancer.
The design of the bags is by Cristiana Pacheco, a student of Fashion Design and Marketing at UMinho, under the concept “Each thread carries a story”, symbolizing the transformation of waste into concrete social support.
The concept emerged in the 2nd Eco-Design Competition, organized by the Department of Textile Engineering at UMinho in partnership with El Corte Inglés Portugal, challenging 3rd year students of that degree to create sustainable tote bags, using recycled textiles provided by To-Be-Green.
