EEUM and IPVC promote Conference and Advanced School to debate Artificial Intelligence

The initiative brought together around 200 experts from 20 countries over five days in Viana do Castelo

The School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM), in partnership with the School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (IPVC), organised the 23rd edition of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (EPIA 2024) from 3 to 6 September.

The initiative, which took place in Viana do Castelo, is a space of excellence for researchers, academics and professionals from all over the world to meet and debate the latest advances and emerging trends in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

The programme included various thematic sessions, presentations of scientific papers, panel discussions and symposiums dedicated to students, promoting an environment for exchanging ideas and networking. There were several renowned keynote speakers, such as Virginia Dignum, a specialist in ethics and artificial intelligence, François Pachet, an expert in computational creativity, and Francisco Herrera Trigueiro, recognised for his contributions to machine learning and big data.

This conference is sponsored by the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence and in collaboration with the ALGORIMTI Centre at EEUM, the Associated Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and the Applied Digital Transformation Laboratory at IPVC, and with the support of the Science and Technology Foundation and the Viana de Castelo City Council.

Advanced School of Artificial Intelligence brought together experts from around the world

Alongside EPIA 2024, Viana do Castelo also hosted the Advanced School of Artificial Intelligence (EAIA 2024), which took place on 2 and 3 September and offered an educational platform of excellence, with workshops and intensive courses taught by experts in the field. These courses were designed to deepen participants’ knowledge of advanced Artificial Intelligence topics, offering a unique opportunity for scientific and professional development. In addition, the event featured a panel open to the local and business community, allowing direct interaction between research and the business sector. This panel aimed to foster collaboration and the sharing of ideas between event participants and local stakeholders, highlighting the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the region’s economic and social development.

The panel featured professors João Gama (Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto / deputy director of LIAAD/INESC TEC), Paulo Novais (EEUM, coordinator of LASI), Luís Paulo Reis (Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, director of LIAAC), and Goreti Marreiros (President of APPIA) and was moderated by anthropologist Pedro Pereira, professor at IPVC.

Artificial Intelligence research has matured remarkably over the last decade, culminating in numerous applications that are already in use or in the development phase, and these scientific events materialise international forums to present and discuss the latest scientific developments and their effective applications, to evaluate the impact of these approaches and to facilitate the transfer of technology.

The two events were attended by around 200 experts from more than 20 countries, such as Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Denmark, the UK, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Ireland, India, the USA, Italy, France, Germany and others.
