Engineering & Art brings painting and poetry to the Gualtar campus

On 6 January, as part of the EEUM’s 50th anniversary celebrations, there was a presentation of the painting exhibition “Entre-linhas” (Between the Lines) by Mário Lima and the book “Meu nome é ninguém” (My Name is Nobody), recently published by Luís Soares Barbosa under the Officium Lectionis – Edições, in the B-Lounge of the Library of the Gualtar campus of the University of Minho.

The ‘Engineering & Art’ initiative thus replicated the ‘Entre-linhas’ exhibition, which had already been on display in the B-Lounge of the Azurém campus in June 2025, in Braga, bringing it closer to the academic community of the Gualtar campus. This time, however, the literature featured professor Luís Soares Barbosa, who presented his latest book of poetry.

It should be noted that in 2023, Luís Soares Barbosa had already brought some of his poems to the academic community in the 1st edition of Engineering & Art, which included the photographic exhibition Irreflexos, by Leonor Lapa Carneiro.

Luís Soares Barbosa is a professor in the Department of Informatics at the University of Minho and a researcher at INESC TEC and the United Nations University – E-Governance Unit. He has published “onde sopra o vento” (Edições Quasi, 2004), “embora seja noite” (2007) and “sobre fio de lume” (2008), at Cosmorama, and “fico só e falo com as sombras”, a short script for a photobiography of Maria Ondina Braga (2016). Later, Officium Lectionis published “breves dias” (brief days), “longo o medo” (long fear) (2022) and “a poesia vende pouco” (poetry sells little) (2023), with a preface by Ondjaki.

Mário Lima is a retired professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at EEUM, who, after an academic career, discovered a new form of expression and passion in painting. “Entre-linhas” brings together works using oil, acrylic, pastel, plastic paint on canvas, and pencil and charcoal on paper techniques. In one of the sets, relatively figurative elements are worked with lines that emerge from the shapes, creating spaces that the colours enhance and the greys contrast or complement. In another set, elements ranging from the almost abstract to the figurative and landscape are worked on.

The exhibition was on display until 12 February 2026, in the B-Lounge space on the Gualtar campus of the University of Minho.
