The 2nd Meeting of Civil Engineers was attended by 400 people in Guimarães
On 10 October, the University of Minho hosted the II Meeting of Civil Engineers ‘Somos Globais’ (We are Global), which aimed to show how Portuguese civil engineering has projected itself in the world and with excellence. The event was attended by 400 participants from all over the country and took place from 10am to 6pm in the hall and auditorium of the Azurém campus in Guimarães.
The programme featured figures from the field on various panels, as well as technical workshops, a prototype construction/programming workshop for schoolchildren and, at the end, a visit to Braga’s municipal stadium with architect Souto de Moura. The event was organised by the Order of Engineers – Northern Region and the UMinho School of Engineering (EEUM).
The opening session took place at 10am, with the coordinator of the College of Civil Engineering – North, Teresa Braga Barbosa, the head of the Braga Delegation of the Order of Engineers, Leonel Cunha e Silva, and the president of EEUM, Pedro Arezes. The first panel analysed the future of qualifications in the area, with leaders from the National Federation of Civil Engineering Students, the universities of Minho and Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro and the polytechnic institutes of Bragança and Viana do Castelo.
The programme then covered digitalisation in civil engineering, such as the use of virtual reality, online licensing, automated construction, occupational safety and 3D capture, with speakers from Construsoft, Teixeira Duarte, Digital4OSH and UMinho, among others.
Projects around the world
Starting at 2.30pm, there was a talk by the president of the International Construction Project Management Association, Raquel Campos e Matos, and examples of Portuguese know-how around the world, such as the Cinnamon Life development in Sri Lanka, the new Wimbledon tennis centre in England, the Olympique de Lyon arena in France, the Muscat International Hospital in Oman and state-of-the-art bridges in various countries.
And how can we differentiate on a global scale? This was the motto for a round table discussion which, at 5pm, brought together the presidents of the Probetão, GEG, afaconsult and Conduril groups. The closing session was attended by the president of the Order of Engineers – Northern Region, Bento Aires.
