José Esgalhado Valença receives the title of Professor Emeritus of the University of Minho

José Esgalhado Valença, senior researcher at the High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) and Full Professor at the School of Engineering of University of Minho, received, on June 23, the title of Professor Emeritus of the same institution.

Given by the University of Minho to its jubilee and retired professors, the title of Professor Emeritus distinguishes the professionals who have stood out in their area of expertise, for the relevance of their contribution, and who will continue to provide the University.

José Manuel Valença was one of the founders of HASLab. He promoted the reformulation of the teaching of Computer Science at the University of Minho, namely in the creation of the Mathematics and Computer Science course. He was a main consultant in the creation of the Citizen’s Card and was involved in security projects for several Government ministries, such as electronic voting, the law on digital certification, the reliability of the financial system and the elections to the European Parliament.

He was Portugal’s representative at Infosec WG of the Galileo satellite constellation.

This distinction will be publicly awarded with a diploma and medal at the University Day ceremony on February 17, 2021.
