The 16th edition of “Summer on Campus” took place from 22 to 26 July in Braga and Guimarães. This is a programme that aims to support registered participants in choosing a higher education course, deepening their knowledge of vocational areas and the University of Minho.
In classrooms, laboratories, in our gardens or on the streets of the two cities that are home to the University, 42 monitors – who are UMinho students – led visitors through activities carried out by more than 50 researchers and professors.
More than 350 young people from the 9th grade to secondary school from various regions of the country and other countries came to “live” at the University of Minho and in the cities of Braga and Guimarães, taking part in 24 scientific and recreational activities, 7 of which were organised by the School of Engineering involving several of EEUM’s departments, centres and interfaces.
This year, EEUM welcomed 120 students who took part in the following activities:
» “Engineering in the Future” which included visits, activities and lectures, organised by the Fibrenamics interfaces, the Computer Graphics Centre, the Departments of Textile Engineering, Industrial Electronic Engineering, and Information Systems, as well as the Sítio.com and Co-working spaces of the Casais Group (one of the sponsors of Summer on Campus). This activity also included various career management activities, CV writing and interview preparation.
» “Chemical and Biological Engineering: Engineering at the Service of Society” (DEB/CEB);
» “The city of the future, today!” (DEC);
» “Plastics: the materials of our future” (DEP/PIEP/CVR),
» “Computing without Frontiers” (DI/Haslab);
» “Industrial Engineering and Management: a step towards sustainability” (DPS and Algoritmi);
and “Mechanical Engineering: The Frontiers of Innovation – Exploring Future Technology and Science” (DEM).
The closing ceremony was attended not only by the President of EEUM, but also by graduates who spoke about their experience and careers, and by the Order of Engineers Northern Region, represented by Engineer Teresa Braga Barbosa, Coordinator of the Civil Engineering College of the OERN, who presented the II Meeting of Civil Engineers, an event that will take place at the Azurém Campus on 10 October 2024, inviting all future (and current) engineering students to take part in this day entitled “We are Global”.
