On 18 November, ShanghaiRanking published its Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, including more than 2,000 universities from 92 countries, assessed in 57 areas of teaching and research.
The University of Minho achieved its highest rankings in the areas of Textile Engineering (22nd place worldwide), Civil Engineering (Top 75) and Food Science and Technology (Top 100). This academy emerged as the national leader in three areas: Textile Engineering (22nd place), Biomedical Engineering (Top 200) and Mechanical Engineering (Top 200).
The 12 areas of teaching and research in which UMinho appeared in 2025 (the same number as in 2024) also include, in Engineering, Biotechnology (Top 200), Materials Engineering and Science (Top 300), Chemical Engineering (Top 400) and Instrument Science and Technology (Top 400); added to these are Psychology (Top 400) and Education (Top 500) in the area of Social Sciences and Human Biology (Top 400) in the area of Life Sciences.
Created in 2009, this ranking classifies higher education institutions according to a set of nine indicators, namely the number of articles published in the most prestigious journals in each area, their impact and the level of international collaboration in these publications, and metrics to assess the international prestige of academies by scientific area.
