The “Summer on Campus” programme includes 21 activities and runs from 20 to 24 July in Braga and Guimarães

From 20 to 24 July, around 400 young people, from Year 9 to sixth form, travelled from all corners of the country to ‘live’ at the University of Minho and in the cities of Braga and Guimarães, taking part in 21 scientific and recreational activities, seven of which were organised by the School of Engineering for 120 of the 400 participants.

This was the 18th edition of the “Summer on Campus” programme, which helped young people discover their vocation and make a more informed choice of degree course. In classrooms, laboratories, gardens and on the streets of the two cities, 42 tutors (students from UMinho) guided the participants throughout the days in activities led by more than 50 researchers and lecturers.

The programme included, for example, assembling batteries, trying out other languages, experimenting with new architectural styles, taking part in a mock court case, learning about a supercomputer, being a journalist for a day, observing a simulated birth, and exploring biomaterials, amongst many other options. The prospective university students shared experiences, questions and dreams with their peers who took part in this initiative, which began in 2009 and has already welcomed around 6,000 young people from across the continents.

On the first day, there were introductory sessions at each of the 12 Schools/Institutes of the University hosting the activities. This was followed by the excitement of the laboratories, discussions with lecturers and tutors, and a taste of academic life. On the final day, Friday, the farewell is always special. At 3.00 pm, in Auditorium A1 on the Gualtar campus in Braga, a discussion took place between the participants and members of the Vice-Chancellor’s team, followed by the presentation of certificates and awards, as well as some socialising.
