The Department of Informatics of the University of Minho has been celebrating, throughout 2026/2027, the 50th anniversary of the regular teaching of Informatics and its Engineering at UMinho. A path of which the entire academic community of the School of Engineering is proud, which marked successive generations of students and was at the origin of a vibrant innovation ecosystem that is today the hallmark of this department.
At the culmination of several events already held, on September 23rd the Department of Informatics programmed a “party day”, where it sought to bring together at the end of the day, students, alumni, teachers, researchers, collaborators and friends, in a moment of meeting, memory, joy and celebration.
The program began at 5:00 pm with the welcome of new students from the courses of the Department of Informatics and the visit to the Commemorative Exhibition of the 50 Years of Informatics at UMinho, in Building 07.
At 6:00 pm, the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary continued with a Sunset at the Panoramic Restaurant on the Gualtar campus, with some musical moments starring members of the DI community, short videos and brief interventions recalling remarkable and fun stories of these 50 years.
In this space and in front of a large audience, the speeches of the Director of the Department of Informatics, Professor Paulo Novais, the Rector of the University of Minho, Professor Pedro Arezes, the Mayor of Guimarães, Dr. Ricardo Araújo, and the Mayor of Braga, Dr. João Rodrigues, were heard.
Also present were the alumnus Eng. Carlos Oliveira, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TAP Air Portugal and Eng. António Murta, CEO of Pathena, as well as Eng. José Dionísio, Co-CEO of the Primavera Foundation, Eng. João Gomes, Director of the Advanced Services Area of FCCN/FCT, Professor João Claro, Chairman of the Board of Directors of INESC TEC, Eng. Ramiro Brito, President of the Business Association of Minho, Mr. Daniel Vilaça, President of the Business Association of Braga, among other personalities.
The School of Engineering is proud and congratulates the Department of Informatics for the national reference it has become, over these 5 decades, in teaching, research and knowledge transfer to society.
