Guimarães, the city where UMinho’s School of Engineering is based, was awarded the title of European Green Capital 2026 on November 27 in Valencia, organized by the European Commission.
This title recognizes the commitment of the Municipality of Guimarães to the environment, innovation and the mobilization of the entire community towards a greener, more inclusive and resilient city.
Guimarães thus becomes the second Portuguese city to obtain this title, after Lisbon, which obtained it in 2020.
The Municipality of Guimarães, a strategic partner of immeasurable value to EEUM and a member of our Advisory Board, is to be congratulated, and our community couldn’t be prouder and more aware of the challenge that we will embrace together, to continue the work that has made it possible to achieve this distinction and make Guimarães a benchmark in the leadership of the green transition.
Domingos Bragança, Mayor of Guimarães, underlines the “importance of this distinction for the Municipality of Guimarães and the environmental commitment of all Vimaranenses in favor of the green transition. More than a distinction, it is recognition of the work that everyone has done in support of this candidacy.”
