EEUM students are awarded scholarships for “New Talents” programmes of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Gilberto Cunha, student of the Integrated Master in Physics Engineering at EEUM, currently developing a dissertation on “Quantum Bayesian reinforcement learning”, at HASLab INESC TEC-UMinho, was awarded a grant from the New Talents in Quantum Technologies programme of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He is already the fourth student of this course at EEUMinho to receive this distinction since the beginning of the programme in the academic year 2017-18.

For Gilberto Cunha, “it is a great honour to have been selected for the New Talents in Quantum Technologies Programme of such a prestigious foundation as Gulbenkian. If there is something better than having passion in an area, it is having the recognition and the opportunity to learn from experienced people who share this passion. This new stage will certainly reinforce my taste and competence in the areas of quantum computing and artificial intelligence, which will certainly help me in the new stages that the future holds. Having been selected also serves to reinforce the excellence of teaching at the University of Minho, to which I owe a lot for my academic path and current skills.”

Mariana Lindo Carvalho, a student of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering (Medical Informatics branch), was also awarded a scholarship from the New Talents in Artificial Intelligence Programme, having as tutor in this programme the lecturer Vítor Alves, who mentions that “over the last few editions we have continued to observe, with pleasure, that some of our best students obtaining this scholarship is also a form of recognition of the teaching and research in AI that is carried out in the School of Engineering”.

In her turn, Mariana Carvalho mentions that “One of my biggest dreams has always been to do/discover something that would make a difference in people’s lives, that would save lives and/or improve their quality! And undoubtedly, Artificial Intelligence is the ideal way to help me achieve my wish, because it allows an endless range of options to help in the treatment/diagnosis of diseases and the consequent improvement of quality of life! So when I heard about this opportunity, I thought it made perfect sense to sign up. I think that with my tutor and the community of scholarship holders, I will learn a lot about Artificial Intelligence and that the activities to be carried out will contribute to my professional and personal growth!”

Congratulations Gilberto and Mariana!
